Broken Planets Set Review

The best part about having a textile course happening in our university is that we get the chance to film in their set that they had built.

From a visual stand point the set is definitely unique, the mixture of futuristic technology and medical structure definitely makes it stand out. However with the mix of old and new made the set a bit tone deaf, for example in the observatory area, bibles and tarot cards are too much of a mixture that do not work.

The use of two way mirrors for the windows allowed for a great way to reflect lighting in while not revealing the light from the other side. Technically however there was some issues when filming the broken planets. For example the floor was uneven making using the track and dolly difficult. The set was also a lot smaller when film equipment and lighting was on the set, meaning juggling the frame of the shot and trying to not get the boom mic and lighting very difficult, especially when the lights inside the set reflected from inside the set.

Another issue that was pretty major was the lack of ceiling allowed outdoor lighting from the windows to flood the set with lighting meaning the shots would become over exposed. But at the same time, the set did prove to be a good way of learning how to use space to its fullest and to workaround the various issues we had.
