Lock and Load with the Arriflex!

Our first project of the year involved us working with Kodak film, physical film, something very different and alien to me as I've never worked with these types of cameras physical film so luckily we had a chance to look at the camera we are using: The Arriflex 16sr3.

Even though i hope i do not get chosen to be a camera op for these projects, i do actually find it interesting how to load these types of camera and the actual science of using physical film, as having the film out in sunlight will ruin the footage and/or the stock. The reason for this is because the film stock is very sensitive to light, as one side of the film stock is coated with silver halide crystals that would absorb light, so loading a camera must be done in the dark, so it doesn't really help that loading the film would be a little complicated.

opening up a different type of camera to practice loading, you can see there are arrows that help show where to feed the film that aim towards two rollers, firstly you would find these teeth to feed the film into the roller which would them be fed through the other rollers.

The actual Camera we are using, the ARRIFLEX 16SR3, uses film magazines to load the camera, which sounds easier but to set the film into the magazine, you would still need to set it in a dark area or bag.
