beauty is in the lens of the beholder

even though i am shown more as an editor in this course, i sometimes forget that most of my previous work at college was mostly operating a camera, for whenever the college had stage plays or very important events that needed to be filmed. However in all the time doing that i had not really concentrated on what type of lens i was using and what a different lens can do for the shots that i film. When i found out i was a camera op for this project this would be one of the few times i had used a camera that allowed to have different lens detached and changed around.

Depending on what lens i have to be used, the camera lens can be changed depending on its focal length which is expressed on a camera through its number in mm (millimeters), allowing the camera operator so set up a shot and change the lens depending on what shot you would want to do, so for example you can have a person in from of a view out of focus while you have their background be the focus of the shot or have the person being the main focus of the shot while you have the background out of focus.

there are many types of lens for different uses, for example a macro Lens with a focal length of between 28 mm – 200 mm lenses are used for extreme close ups, however this lens is used for photography depending on the project. a fisheye Lens with a focal length of 6 mm – 16 mm lenses have a very wide angle of perspective, much like a wide Angle Lens with a focal length of 14 mm – 35 mm lenses, with this type of lens being able to be used on the black magic ursa, aswell as a Standard lens of 50mm lenses. A type of lens with a zoom would also allow you to use a variable lens which can help shift different focal lengths such as the black magics 55-200 mm variable lens. lenses that have no zoom functions are known as prime lenses, most commonly with a focal length of 35mm to 50mm, which means you would have to set up a shot and move the camera in the right angle and frame on the subject.

with all these different lenses that i have to work with it does get rather confusing for me but with our auditions coming up i might find it more comfortable to first use that time to test what lenses i am more comfortable im with in the space we are working in
