Killing time production diary 2 Mortal kombat
coming back from the easter holiday had resfreshed my mind on the project which had allowed me to take another look at the fighting sequence i had pieced together. Although i am happy with the end results i decided to see how other major blockbuster films edit fight sequences in their own unique way.
Starting off from a film that i took inspiration from with Taken 3, in which the fight takes place in a closed off area, much like the alleyway in killing time, in which each hit is usually followed up with a cut to a different angle or action which could be for multiple reasons, for starters to make the fight scene more exciting and engaging to view and also to mask hits that don't look believable without the cut to a different angle to hide that issue, much like killing time with most of the hits not even having contact with the body. My only concern with this style of editing is the fact that most of the time you cannot tell what is happening and all the cuts start to become disorientating to a viewer as much as it helps to mask the overall combat situation.
comparing this to a similar fight scene from Mission Impossible: fallout in which it also starts off in an enclosed area with also small cuts in between hits to also possibly mask connections to the body, but what makes this fight more different to the other fight scene from taken is that it uses two methods to mask the connections which not taking itself away from the action. For starters it uses the technique of removing one frame before contact and the 2nd using motion blur to also hide the sudden frame removal.
Taking that into consideration i have tried to make a hybridisation of both these methods of editing for killing time as there are shots in which the camera also moves with the punch to mask the connections also which our director and camera op may have researched into leading to some pretty good results. i have also been making the cuts to different angles as minimal as possible so that it would be as disorientating as taken 3 and try removing a frame per hit to see if that yields any results.
