Designing The Devil

The Accuser, the Beast, Beelzebub, Satan. He goes by many names,

its the Devil! from the bible to TV and film, the Devil has been shown to be various styles and forms, most noticeably, horned goat like humanoid, for the era of cartoons from the 30s, the devil was depicted as a large fat black (more likely red from colour depictions of the time). this was the bases of my design. i didn't want to depict a typical stereotypical devil, i wanted to introduce another form of cartoon devil from a childhood card game.

Enter Yu-Gi-Oh! or more to the point: Toon Summoned Skull.

a cartoon caricature of summoned skull, this loony Toon is a more stretchier and slender depiction of a devil-like creature. what is also bizarre about this monster is the fact he has no lower half of his body in his artwork and the TV show he is based on, this is because he is attached to a book called "Toon World", the card that actually transforms monsters into cartoon caricatures

i decided to mix both things i hold dear to me to create my version of the devil.

my first design was originally just a floating head rising from a pit of fire, but ultimately it wouldn't be as animated as i wanted it to be. true, i could make him heavily expressive, but like cartoons at the time, movement was what made them stand out to animation today.

so, for my final concept, i combined the ascetics of the 1930s and the lankyness and stretchyness of toon summoned skull. This design allows our fallen angel to move around unnaturally and interact with our poor protagonists. I also messed around with my devils lower half too, instead of being attached to a book, i decided to look like he's literally stretching out of hell just to torment people.

Next on my to do list is to animate through photoshop, boy that sould be fun.
